There is not any proper or simple method of knowing your computer is infected by virus. It is to be clear that some viruses exhibit certain kind of behavior which tells you immediately that they are on your system, but somtimes they do not .So there is a saying "there is usually no way to rule out a virus as a possible cause of strange software or system behavior on your PC". Virus writers writes(try to write) their virus program in such a manner that they avoid etection, and causes mischief.
some of the common symptoms that reveals your system is infected with virus are:
- Spontaneous system reboots

- Application crashes
- Sound problems with the speaker or sound card.
- Seemingly random glitches on the screen.
- Corrupted hard disk data.
- Partitions that seem to "disappear".
- System slowdowns.
- Hard disks that won't boot.
